Cliff Scaling in the Peak District

Including total newcomers will soon be ascending sheltered Peak District rock faces on this two-day course. Participants will become proficient in securing the rope, safety techniques and several climbing techniques, along with descending. Limited to six participants to each tutor, there is significant personalized coaching and tailored objectives. The course is open to all individuals over the age of 13 and over, from absolute beginners to those with a bit of gym climbing background. It is non-accommodation option, but there is a list of suggested, budget-friendly accommodation in the vicinity, including campgrounds, hostels, bed and breakfasts and pubs with rooms. The venue is a brief walk from the local train station, located on the Hope Valley line from Manchester to Sheffield.

Non-Representational Art in Andalucía

This historic hillside village, a ancient town in southern Spain, about 45 minutes’ drive from Granada, is the stimulating setting for this painting holiday. Painters of all abilities – even beginners – will learn how to conceive and execute modern art. Some time will be spent outside, working on tutorials out in nature. These initial charcoal drawings and watercolour studies will then be developed in the studio, with guests creating a number of abstract landscapes in acrylics to be displayed in the local community. Participants has sole use of the venue, which is centered on an open courtyard and has a sun terrace with panoramic vistas over the countryside. The price includes five days’ art instruction; all meals; and an outing to the nearby fortress and other local sights.

Vegetarian Cooking in Portugal

This sun-drenched foodie getaway, based at a riverside villa in the central Algarve, is inspired by the vegetarian dishes of celebrated cooks. Participants will master the art of meze spreads, attend a falafel-making workshop, perfect mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains like spicy mushroom ragu and moussaka. There are visits to the local market and a local vineyard to taste Portuguese wines, combined with free time for walks by the nearby river, to unwind on the deck or swim in the infinity pool. The villa, a renovated rural property, has multiple rooms, plus safari tents in the grounds.

Street Dance in Buckinghamshire

Hip Hop Don’t Stop is an uplifting, welcoming weekend dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The daily schedule throughout the camp is a high-energy group warmup, then three 90-minute classes teaching various urban dance forms, then an 60-minute jam to show off those solos. Participants are divided into levels according to ability and experience, so it is perfect for those who are brand new to street dance, all the way to advanced dancers or instructors. This event does not provide lodging but there are a number of hostels and hotels within walking distance, and it is 23-35 minutes by train into London.

Maritime Singing Weekend in Cornwall

This coastal town is the excellent spot for a maritime music retreat. Participants will learn historic sailing songs from a folk singer and vocal coach, and have a go at composing original ones. The schedule includes voice exercises, breath control techniques, stagecraft advice and a final evening concert. The retreat is based at a country house overlooking the bay. Full board are included, such as a traditional tea on the first day, breakfast options, lunches to go and evening meals. Grog, alas, is not provided. Everyone join in: “What will we do with the tipsy mariner …?”

Creative Writing in Crete

Writer and lecturer an experienced instructor runs the daily workshops on this writing retreat. He explores everything from story structure, characters, locations and suspense, to submitting work to publishers. Greg’s wife, the bestselling author Kate Mosse, will participate in events at the start and finish of the week. The holiday is held at a traditional complex in Vamos at the base of the White mountains – 10 private accommodations surround a garden and pool (companions are welcome to come along). On the last night, budding authors celebrate with a musical performance in the courtyard and a final meal.

Beginners' Beekeeping in Wales

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a host of courses covering sustainability: from creating habitats to upcycling. This two-day course will help participants understand the fundamentals of apiary management, explore the biology of bees and discover their ecological importance. It is designed to produce “ecologically mindful beekeepers”. This course is also a chance to de-stress in the organization's carefully maintained woodlands, which are habitat for wildlife, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and rare birds. Accommodation the evening prior is 80 pounds, and full-board accommodation for the weekend is £97.

Yachting for Beginners in Essex

These recently launched weekend sailing courses are spent on dinghies and Dufours on the estuary in Essex. They are designed for adult beginners starting out or more experienced mariners who want a skills update. Participants can improve their steering, strengthen their seamanship and work towards the Royal Yachting Association’s levels one to three in a fun, welcoming environment. There are non-residential and residential packages, staying in basic shared rooms in the waterside training centre. The non-residential package includes lunches, while the overnight option covers two nights’ accommodation and all meals, from full English breakfasts to evening barbecues.
